International Education News

We love International Education Week! Not only because we announce the winners of the Travel Video Contest each year during IEW, but also because we get a new Open Doors report and tons of events around the world celebrating international education. The focused attention on our industry, if only for a few days, always makes us feel a small part of something bigger, and we’re proud to work in a field that intersects with students’ lives during this powerful, transformative experience in their life. The hundreds of entries into the Travel Video Contest create an echo chamber for this feeling - and it feels good.

The Finalists and Viewers’ Choice Winner Announced

The Travel Video Contest finalists have been determined and we couldn’t be more pleased to announce this talented group of students! This year we were impressed by the determination, accomplishments, creativity, passion and overall journey of each student that entered. However, only fifteen contestants were able to continue to the next round of the contest for a chance to win $4,000 and their very own blog on

Included in the group of finalists is the Viewers’ Choice Winner: Juan Sebastian Bayona Carrillo, an international student at Oklahoma State University, who got the most votes from viewers. Juan is enjoying his time in the United States and is on a mission to visit members of his family in Maryland.

Our panel of judges will determine the first, second and third place winners which will be announced on November 17th, the last day of International Education Week. Check out the impressive lineup of contest finalists and stay tuned for the winners to be announced.

The 2017 Open Doors Report Released

The 2017 Open Doors report is now available for your review. Each year IIE, with support from the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, releases this comprehensive information to provide insight on the world of international education. In the 2017 report we see that although the number of international students in the US increased by 3.4%, new international student enrollment decreased by 3.3% over the last year along with other notable shifts.

Other interesting items in the latest release include China and India having a stronghold on the top two places of origin of international students, while Saudi Arabia is replaced in the third spot by South Korea. Additionally, when it comes to primary sources of funding fewer students are counting on US colleges and universities and are relying more significantly on current employment. However, one of the most dramatic changes is the 14% decrease in the number of individuals enrolled in non-degree programs (like English language programs). See below for a deeper look into the response by the ESL industry to these dropping numbers. You can view more on the latest Open Doors report findings directly from IIE.

Your Social Media Backlot Tour Session Recap

This year the team presented at six regional conferences where they provided a social media backlot tour. The sessions took a behind the scenes look at Facebook and what information it collects on each user and how it uses that information to target relevant ads. It also looked at what information Facebook gathers from posts along with third party providers and who they share user information with, followed by how you can use that information to target paid ads to students around the world that you want to reach.

If you missed our sessions take a look at the presentations in the resource section of our site and see how you can market to international students using the information Facebook collects.

How ESL Providers are Weathering the Storm

The news for ESL providers is not pretty. The current US political climate, fierce competition, the global economy, and the growing popularity of pathway programs are all creating the perfect storm that is forcing the industry to change its ways. Long gone are the days in which ESL providers can sit back and count the number of Saudi or Kuwaiti students to fill their seats year after year, with little effort.

In a recent Fall 2017 Membership Enrollment Trends survey by EnglishUSA, 70% of the respondents reported a decline in Fall enrollments for 2017 while 29% stayed flat or saw an increase. Eighty-five percent of those that reported the decrease saw a large decrease of 11-50%. So what are the 29% who have remained flat (or seen growth) doing?

It seems like those that are forming new relationships with pathway programs, fair providers, online marketers and going the agent route, are the survivors. They are winning the competition battle and getting quality students. To learn more about what the 29% are doing, check out our blog below.
