International Education News

Early next month, five volunteers from Envisage will fly to Guatemala for a week to complete the building of a school and playground with the non-profit called School the World. This is our second year sponsoring the program and we love it - more details below. Although we’ll be a bit short-handed for that week, we still have a lot going on. It’s group insurance time, and everyone at ISI is busy spreading the word about our terrific group insurance options for international students coming to the US. We’re also delighted to roll out new student-facing resources on mental health and sexual assault awareness, with a quick preview of tax season to come.

Our Second Year Partnership with School The World

We are thrilled that for the second year we’re heading to Guatemala for one week to support the efforts of School the World (STW), an organization founded on the belief that empowerment begins with education. Their goal is to provide access to quality education to those living in the rural villages of Central America and though we’re building a school and playground, the commitment doesn’t stop there. School the World makes a minimum five-year commitment to each community to train teachers, empower parents, provide supplies, and monitor progress. Only after a community has become self-sufficient in its primary education does School the World consider the job done.

On March 3rd five members of the Envisage International Corporation (EIC) team will head to Central America and join members of Flywire, IvyWise, and International Medical Group to build a school. Each volunteer has committed to fund-raising half the cost of their participation, with the companies contributing the other half plus the necessary fixed amount to cover the hard costs of school construction.

Student Awareness Resources

If you found our trainings on Sexual Assault Awareness & Safety and Emotional & Mental Health Awareness helpful, then you will also want to see our newest student info pages that have been designed for international students to engage on both topics in further detail.

Sexual Assault Awareness & Safety

In this section students can learn more about sexual assault and consent including what consent looks like, the age of consent by state, a video highlighting cultural views on sexual assault, tips for staying safe and how to be an active bystander.

Emotional & Mental Health Awareness

This section provides students with information on what mental health is, how to achieve emotional wellness, when and where to seek help, and common myths around this topic. Also included are two videos: one mental health overview and one on common stressors international students face.

You are welcome to use these with our trainings, or by themselves, and we encourage you to link to these pages as an additional resource for your students.

Our Tax Form 8843 Online Wizard is Updated

Last year InternationalStudent.com created a Tax Form 8843 Online Wizard to help students during tax season. We are excited to announce that it has been updated for the new year and it’s ready to help your students once again. Designed to be easy to use, the Form 8843 online wizard is free and allows students to enter their details into the form which then pre-populates into the actual IRS Form 8843 and can be downloaded, signed and sent to the IRS for processing. We don’t hold any of the student’s information, it’s populated onto the form and then immediately thrown away, so privacy is maintained throughout the process.

Every international student and their dependent must submit Form 8843 to the IRS, even if income was not received. Please feel free to refer your students to our tool to help them this tax season!

Voice-user Interface Gaining Popularity

Voice-user Interface (VUI) software enables users to interact with technology via speech, the most common and fundamental means of human communication. The adoption of Voice-user Interface devices is growing at a rapid rate and bringing with them a lot of positive improvements to our everyday lives. However, there are real privacy and security concerns about VUI devices. It is important to clearly understand both the positive and negatives to this new technology. Read our blog to get further information on possible drawbacks when it comes to VUI.
