The Impact of Pervasive Technology on the Emotional Wellness
of International Students

With Smartphones in the hands of most international students, the addiction to technology, gaming and social media is becoming more and more prevalent - and the numbers reflect this. 60% of college students admit to smartphone addiction. 85% of college males are gamers, and 1 in 8 develop addiction patterns. And, 83% of college-aged students use social media. You may think that this constant online “socializing” would make students feel more connected than ever. The reality, however, is that experts are finding that the more time spent immersed in the world, the lonelier and more anxious students are. This session is going to explore the impact on emotional wellness of our international students, as technology, smartphones, gaming and social media player an ever-important role in these students’ lives.

How to Effectively Use Email Marketing in Your Recruitment Strategy

Email communication with prospective international students is crucial when it comes to turning leads into applicants. From the moment a student shows interest in a university the opportunity to receive a high email engagement rate from that individual begins to decline; timing and messaging are key when it comes to leveraging an email marketing recruitment strategy. In this session, we will cover when and how to email prospective students, including the key parts of an email that can make or break its success. We will provide examples of real emails that have had high engagement rates, tips to get an email marketing series in place, and ways to evaluate and improve your current email marketing plan. Email is 40 times more effective at acquiring new customers than Facebook or Twitter, and attendees will leave this session with insight on how to make it work for their institution

Ashley Zahradnick: Region III, Region X, Region VII

Travel Video Contest Update: Deadline in One Week

Last month we launched our Travel Video Contest and believe it or not, the deadline is already quickly approaching on October 15th. We are thrilled to host this contest for the 14th year as an effort to promote and support international education. Your students can still enter our Travel Video Contest by filming a 4-minute or less video that includes one of the following:

  • Students currently studying outside their home country should include where they would like to travel
  • Those who are not currently studying outside their home country should include details on their proposed international education

Please feel free to share our contest details with your students, or remind them of the upcoming deadline to win one of five cash awards, including the $4,000 first-place prize. Finalists will be announced the week of November 11th, and the winners will be named on the last day of International Education Week: November 22nd. Good luck to students at your institution and we look forward to watching their videos!
