Google recently announced their own version of the Facebook “Like” system in the form of Google +1. The new recommendation tool allows users to essentially like a web listing in the google search engine listing pages and when activated and pushed, you will see the +1 image like we have on the right. Google says “Click +1 to publicly give something your stamp of approval. Your +1’s can help friends, contacts, and others on the web find the best stuff when they search.”
The +1 system could be something big – at the moment it is experimental and to activate the service you need to be logged into your Google account and then visit http://www.google.com/experimental/ to join in. Once you are in, do a google search – for example if you google search:
You will now see the +1 image, click that to essentially recommend a listing. This will then show up in your google profile so that your friends and family can see what sites you are recommending.
Search Engine Benefits
Google +1 is still in experimental stage – so its unclear how this will affect your rankings and in what manner. What we do know is in the reference we have above from Google itself on the service “Your +1’s can help friends, contacts, and others on the web find the best stuff when they search.” This very clearly states +1 will be influencing search listings, not only for your friends but also to others who are searching on the web.
We all know that Google has been using social media to help with their search algorithm, but this is now a very clear message that +1 will influence your rank! Our advice – get into +1 for your site sooner rather than later as it could provide you with better listings and better organic traffic!
